March 11, 2011 is a day that can define a decade, a country, and a generation. The magnitude of destruction, the unthinkable tragedy, and the emerging triumphant stories are amazing to witness. Amazing on both ends of the spectrum.
I have a lot of trouble absorbing the scale of these images outside of a John Cusack movie. It’s natural to look for a baseline in a photo – something that gives us perspective so we can translate it into what we understand and know. When I try to do that here, I just get a surreal feeling. “No, it can’t be.” But it is.
